Risk Factors and Community Education Strategies for Dengue Prevention in Rural Communities
Main Article Content
Abstract
This essay offers a critical and reflective analysis of the dengue situation in rural communities in intertropical regions, with a particular emphasis on the structural determinants that perpetuate the vulnerability of these populations and on the actual scope and limitations of community education as a prevention tool. A qualitative, documentary, and narrative design was adopted, structured according to the logic of a simple case study. The basic argument is that rural dengue is a unique manifestation of health inequality; thus, it is a disease that takes hold where the state arrives too late, where water is stored in buckets because there are no pipes, and where educational programs appear with the urgency of an outbreak and disappear when the allocated budget runs out. The study challenges the recurring illusion that informing equals preventing, examines why the gap between knowledge and practice is so persistent, and proposes that true prevention requires integrating community education with concrete structural transformations. The analysis was grounded in empirical evidence from India, Ecuador, Cambodia, Tanzania, and Colombia, among other contexts.
