Abstract

This curricular integration project has as its main purpose the identification of the elements that trigger traffic congestion at the intersection of Quito Avenue and Latacunga Street, which is located within the urban area of Santo Domingo de los Colorados. The methodological approach used in this research is characterized by its non-experimental nature, supported by a quantitative and qualitative analysis. No experimental tests or laboratory procedures have been required in the data collection and analysis process. Instead, the measurement of vehicular flows has been carried out through gauging, which has made it possible to identify variations in traffic at the aforementioned intersection. In this context, it has been found that a total of 5,996 vehicles circulate on Quito Avenue in the direction from West to East, while 6,277 vehicles travel on Latacunga Street from South to North. These results reflect the magnitude of the vehicle congestion problem in said area. Furthermore, in order to determine the factors that contribute to this congestion, the Hourly Volume of Maximum Demand (VHMD) has been calculated, which has been estimated during the interval from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. One of the factors identified as a generator of traffic congestion is traffic light desynchronization, which causes traffic obstruction in both directions. This research pursues the rigorous and academic analysis of the factors underlying traffic congestion at the intersection of Avenida Quito. and Latacunga Street in Santo Domingo de los Colorados, establishing a solid foundation for future proposals and solutions aimed at improving traffic flow in this urban area.
