Abstract

The present investigation focuses on the identification of the primary factors that contribute to the classification of the intersection located at the confluence of Chone Avenue and Bombolí Avenue in the city of Santo Domingo as a critical point for road incidents. For this purpose, a field study was carried out in order to evaluate the current state of the elements that make up the road infrastructure at said intersection, examine its operational characteristics, observe the behavior of road users and collect opinion. of residents surrounding the intersection. To carry out the identification of each of these components, a set of investigative techniques and instruments were used, which included the application of questionnaires and the preparation of technical observation sheets. After the relevant analysis, it was determined that a total of 5 vertical traffic signs and 27 horizontal signs are installed at the intersection in question. The cycle time of the signalized intersection was set at 56 seconds. According to the vehicle capacity data collected, it was found that, during rush hour, a total of 3,447 vehicles traveled, of which 37 vehicles made "U" turns and 27 vehicles disobeyed the traffic light signal when driving when it was in motion. It was in red. As a result of the investigations carried out, it is concluded that the main cause of traffic incidents at this intersection is related to the behavior and conduct of the inhabitants, who do not comply with traffic laws and neglect road regulation devices and signs.
