Abstract

The present investigation was based on carrying out a traffic volume study at the intersection that connects Chone, Galapagos and Quevedo avenues, located in the La Virgen sector. The main objective of this research was to evaluate the current characteristics of the vehicular flow at this intersection, taking into account that it currently has an overpass infrastructure in the form of a depressed bridge, which represents a considerable investment. The purpose of this study was to determine how this civil work influences the variation of vehicular traffic in the area. The methodology used was based on the direct observation technique, which involved studying vehicle capacity at the intersection over a period of 12 hours a day, with 15-minute intervals. In addition, measurements were carried out to evaluate the characteristics of the traffic lights at the intersection and the length of the vehicle queues at each of the entrances was recorded during rush hour. The results obtained after analyzing the data revealed that the Average Daily Traffic (TPD) at this intersection amounts to 25,898 vehicles. Peak hour occurs in the time interval from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with an hourly volume of maximum demand of 2,068 vehicles. Five entrances were identified at the intersection, with the following traffic volumes: 6,623 vehicles on Chone Avenue, 13,172 vehicles on Quevedo Avenue, 4,172 vehicles on Galápagos Avenue, 480 vehicles on Maldonado Street and 1,451 vehicles on San Miguel Street. As a result of this study, the implementation of awareness campaigns on sustainable urban mobility is proposed in order to promote the use of sustainable means of transport in the area.
