Utilizing denim textile scraps in the manufacture of sustainable clothing

Abstract

This article addressed the lack of a structured system for managing and reusing denim waste at the company under study, as this resulted in material waste and hindered the implementation of sustainable practices. The objective was to apply textile upcycling to utilize denim scraps in the production of sustainable garments. The methodology employed a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods. The qualitative approach analyzed the perceptions, practices, and attitudes of the company's staff, while the quantitative approach measured the acceptance of products made with recycled denim. The integration of both approaches provided a comprehensive and objective view of the issue. The results indicate that 100% of the surveyed customers have a high acceptance of sustainable denim garments, although 55% were found to have limited knowledge of textile recycling processes. In conclusion, the application of textile upcycling represents a viable alternative to reduce the environmental impact of denim waste, optimize the use of materials, and strengthen Coditex's sustainable image among its customers through new lines based on circular economy principles.
