Road safety audit at the intersection of Quevedo Avenue and Cooperativismo Avenue, Santo Domingo canton

Abstract

This research, entitled "Road Safety Audit at the Intersection of Av. Quevedo and Av. Del Cooperativismo," aimed to assess the condition of the road infrastructure, in accordance with current technical regulations, in order to identify risk factors and propose improvements that contribute to reducing road accidents. The problem arises from the high incidence of accidents at this intersection, attributed to both structural deficiencies and user behavior. The methodology employed was based on a road safety audit, which included on-site fieldwork, geometric data collection, and analysis of signage, traffic lights, and accessibility, using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The results show that the intersection has a "T" design, deteriorated pavement, incomplete or worn signage, poor lighting, and a lack of safe pedestrian infrastructure. It was classified as "fair" with a score of 1.25/5. Critical issues related to lighting, the lack of sidewalks and bike lanes, the lack of inclusive infrastructure, and the absence of vertical signage in key areas were identified. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the intersection based on night lighting, maintenance of the road surface, adaptation of pedestrian sidewalks, implementation of pedestrian road signs and infrastructure for people with disabilities.
