Abstract

Beekeeping, as an economic activity, has emerged as a vital component for multisectoral economic growth. This practice, underestimated in many contexts, offers significant profitability with minimal initial investment. Apiculture not only generates income and employment for rural communities but also has a positive impact on agriculture. Bee pollination enhances the productivity and quality of crops such as almonds, avocados, cherries, and others, representing a crucial link in the global food chain. Despite its influence, beekeeping faces challenges such as habitat loss and pesticide use. Several countries have implemented policies and programs to support beekeepers, aiming to promote sustainability and improve food security. In Ecuador, beekeeping has experienced considerable growth, demonstrating significant potential in honey production and its derivatives. While its positive impact on the local economy and sustainable development is recognized, further detailed studies are needed to precisely quantify its influence on the country's economic growth and the enhancement of its inhabitants' quality of life.
