Abstract
The objective of the qualitative-quantitative study at a descriptive level was to identify the fundamental causes of traffic congestion at the intersection between Avenida Quevedo and Avenida Abrahán Calazacón, located in the La Chorrera sector. This research sought to understand the factors that contributed to the accumulation of traffic at this specific point. Using an analytical approach and tools such as surveys and vehicle flow analysis, traffic dynamics and road infrastructure elements in this area were explored. A number of key aspects were detected: Recurrent patterns of congestion were identified during peak hours, especially between 08:00 and 10:00, as well as between 17:00 and 19:00. During these intervals, a significantly high average vehicle flow was observed, reaching a peak of 4,500 vehicles per hour. Among the factors that most contributed to this congestion were the presence of poorly synchronized traffic lights, the limited capacity of access roads and the presence of parking areas that reduced vehicle flow. In addition, inappropriate behavior by some drivers was observed, such as sudden lane changes or irregular stops. The analysis revealed that traffic congestion at the intersection of Avenida Quevedo and Avenida Abrahán Calazacon was mainly due to the combination of structural factors and inappropriate driving behaviors. These findings can serve as a basis for implementing measures that optimize circulation and improve mobility in this specific area.
