Abstract

The objective of the work was to determine the factors that caused traffic accidents at the intersection of Abrahán Calazacon Avenue and Río Toachi Avenue. This problem was considered a critical point for road accidents, with four incidents recorded, two without serious consequences and two fatal. The methodology used was developed from the mixed approach at a descriptive level, which allowed, through the instruments applied: surveys, technical sheets and interviews, to identify the current characteristics of the road infrastructure, as well as the operational behaviors and the users who travel. for the place. It was determined that there were 14 traffic signs, covering informative, preventive and regulatory aspects. Between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., an average of 28,467 vehicles circulated through the intersection; Of them, 569 vehicles crossed with the red light, 2,562 with amber and the remaining 25,336 with green. In addition, 263 pedestrians were identified who did not respect the traffic light signals and did not use the sidewalks. The analysis of these data established that the main cause of traffic accidents at the intersection was due to inappropriate behavior of road users, the most common being the lack of respect for traffic light signals and the failure to use the traffic lights. sidewalks when walking.
